We are currently accepting applications for Substitute Teachers and Substitute Teacher Assistants.
Here’s an idea if you are interested in being a substitute – for us or for any licensed child care facility/preschool.
Take a few simple steps to market yourself as a substitute…
- Prepare an employment file of your own, compiling all paperwork required by licensing.
- Decide the hourly rate that makes it worth your time, energy, and talent to fill in as a substitute.
- Send your resume with a cover letter to all of the child care centers/preschools where you would like to be a substitute.
You will then be a solution to a Director’s biggest problem…
A Director’s greatest stressor is covering shifts when employees are suddenly unavailable due to illness or other unforeseen obligations. They are willing to pay a higher hourly rate in order to ensure that their classrooms are kept in ratio. It creates even more of a challenge that licensing standards require that all employee files must be complete – including three clearances, written references, verification of training/education, etc.
If you are a reliable, professional, caring substitute, you will be sure to get calls on a regular basis requesting your services. You can accept work when you choose to do so, set your own hours, and gain experience in a variety of different environments.

Here are the things that will be required for your employment file…
- Completed Day Care Staff Data Form - download here
- Completed W-4 - download here
- Completed I-9 - download here
- Current Health Assessment (must be dated within 90 days before start date) - download here
- Copy of your driver’s license and social security card (if you do not have those, check the I-9 instructions for other acceptable forms of identification)
- Copy of your training certificates, transcript, or diploma from your highest level of education
- Written verification of your experience working with children
- Copy of Request for PA Child Abuse History (you’ll have to send out with $10.00 money order) - download here
- Copy of Request for State Police Criminal Record Check - download here (you’ll have to send out with $10.00 money order, OR go online to https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp)
- Copy of Completed FBI Fingerprinting (MUST be done through Cogent – instructions at www.pa.cogentid.com/dpw.)
- Two written, non-family references from individuals attesting to your suitability to work with children.
When you have all of the above in your file, please contact the Director to schedule an interview to be considered for our sub list.
